The influence of beaver dams on animal communities of streams and surrounding riparian zones

چکیده
Beaver dams tend to increase habitat heterogeneity by breaking up streams into lentic and lotic sections. I investigated the impact of beaver dams on macroinvertebrates in and near Cart Creek in Newbury, MA. I found that the high spatial density of dams on this small creek suppresses aquatic species diversity, but the ponds might be increasing the species diversity of terrestrial macroinvertebrates. I also found that significant trophic subsidies are present between aquatic and terrestrial organisms, with terrestrial predators feeding on aquatic animals and aquatic herbivores and detritivores feeding on leaf litter and other detritus fallen into the creek from the land.

Ecology, management, and conservation implications of North American beaver (Castor canadensis) in dryland streams
1. After near-extirpation in the early 20th century, beaver populations are increasing throughout many parts of North America. Simultaneously, there is an emerging interest in employing beaver activity for stream restoration in arid and semi-arid environments (collectively, ‘drylands’), where streams and adjacent riparian ecosystems are expected to face heightened challenges from climate change...
متن کاملAlteration of stream temperature by natural and artificial beaver dams
Beaver are an integral component of hydrologic, geomorphic, and biotic processes within North American stream systems, and their propensity to build dams alters stream and riparian structure and function to the benefit of many aquatic and terrestrial species. Recognizing this, beaver relocation efforts and/or application of structures designed to mimic the function of beaver dams are increasing...
متن کاملEcosystem engineers maintain a rare species of butterfly and increase plant diversity
We evaluated whether ecosystem engineers can accomplish two conservation goals simultaneously: (1) indirectly maintain populations of an endangered animal through habitat modifi cation and (2) increase riparian plant diversity. We tested for eff ects of a prominent ecosystem engineer, the beaver Castor canadensis, on populations of St. Francis’ satyr butterfl y Neonympha mitchellii francisci an...
متن کاملManaging the effects of riparian vegetation on flooding
~ The major effect of removing riparian vegetation and wood from streams has been the changes in channel form (widening, deepening and straightening) that have occurred. It is important to consider that we are returning vegetation to a channel system that now has a much larger flow capacity. ~ The major hydrological effect of returning vegetation to streams is via its influence on roughness and...
متن کاملDiversity and distribution of riparian plant communities in relation to stream size and eutrophication.
The present study was conducted in 47 different riparian areas distributed throughout Denmark to investigate diversity and distributional patterns of plant communities along a lowland stream size gradient (first to fifth order). The investigated areas were representative for Danish riparian areas not in use for agricultural production. We investigated plant community richness along a stream siz...
